Tania Evans, owner of REA, has written award-winning equine articles for international and national magazines for over 40 years.

Riding for the whole family.

It has been a lifetime of riding for Tania. She had a pony of her own that she rode bareback, named Dutch. She often splashed into Lake Michigan on summer days.  Dutch, for chocolate, stood in the water, bracing slightly against the current while Tania stood on his back and dove into the next big wave.  He was the kindest horse!  He let her swim between his legs, crawl again up onto his sturdy back and dive once more.  Was he perfect?  No.  At night, sometimes, he would escape and walk to a nearby orchard to eat apples.  She would get a stern call in the morning, "Come get your pony."  Sometimes, he walked in the night over several miles to a pasture he knew where work horses, Belgians, lived.  Someone would drive her out there to get him. She rode Dutch back into town. It was a long ride. They ended up down at the Empire beach for a swim.

Tania's mother and her siblings had ponies.  As kids they loved the Peter Rabbit stories and  named the ponies after the rabbits - Topsy, Mopsy and so on.  Tania's grandfather Peter and her great-grandfather Peter ran logging camps on the Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan. Both Peters were the amateur farriers and vets for the 350 head of horses that pulled the logs out of the winter woods on skid wagons.
